In this episode we look at the reasons and benefits of engaging an external DM.
We cover the history of search with Alta Vista, the fact we now spend more time on internet activities than watching TV and ask have robots taken over the world. Note audio is at the bottom of the page
Mia
We left off, we were talking about being a Google partner. And we briefly touched on the advantages of getting a digital marketer and external Digital Marketer in versus employing somebody. And even you were saying, as kids leave University, they’re using outdated information. So why is it so important for small business owners today to engage someone like you your services and start implementing some of your strategies in their business?
Tony skinner
Well, I guess if you think about it, Google’s only been around for 20 years. So that’s all really
Mia
remains around to hear my dad used to say to us, Google’s never gonna last Don’t worry about Google, you’ve got to use this one dog fetch. I mean, what the heck is dog fetch? He goes, Yeah, that’s the one that you’ve got to use. And there’s a little image of a little dog poo. This was that we’re going back 20
Tony skinner
years ago, I remember Alta Vista and all sorts of and then Yahoo, of course, and y’all your last out because it’s a portal. I guess, if you think about digital marketing, and the good thing about Google and why they’ve done so well, is it simplicity. Yeah, so it’s a nice, clean screen. And when you think about digital marketing, you want that element of simplicity. It’s like a duck. So youve got a duck gracefully gliding across the water, but they’re paddling frantically under the water. So digital marketing should be something that’s there. you interact with it as a business owner occasionally, and lots of stuff goes on in the background.
It’s interesting as well that and really say that it’s I think about the fact that it’s only been around for 20 years. It’s crazy, isn’t it? Because you know, the phrase, I’ll just Google, it just seems to have been around forever. Is it in the dictionary?
It actually is. It actually is now. Yeah, it is one of the last 20 years or so one of the newest words, I’m trying I’m trying to think in terms of what I use. Because I mean, I guess probably prior to Google, I mean, I just remember I think, I mean, look, maybe it was Yahoo, I think ask jeeves,
Mia
or the encyclopedia brittanica?
Paul
That’s true? Yes. But only until 1995.
Mia
So you were saying we just got off track there a little bit. He was saying that Google, the use of Google that business owners may be using Google, just to find things. But in terms of the functionality of Google, there’s so much more below the surface going absolutely crazy. There’s so much underneath it. And I know from the analytical side of things, there is a lot of things going in there. And it does take up so much time. So the importance to work with a digital marketer, who knows the analytics, who knows how the ads go, because when I look at Google X, no idea.
Tony skinner
Yeah, exactly. So the whole idea is that you get a specialist in like you do for anything. So if you have an electrician or a plumber, you get a specialist in. And it’s actually more efficient, to spend the time on your business than it is to worry about the little things and other things in the background.
Mia
That’s how important is that? I think a lot of people forget that they need to take into account their hours. So if you you’re billing out your hours, I think, Paul, you’re burning out of just over $1,000 these days. But you know, for you to spend an hour trying to place a Google ad, it’s going to take you longer than an hour. And there’s all hours that you can no longer bill.
Tony skinner
That’s exactly right. And if you look at the stats, I mean, it’s so important to have a good digital marketing strategy. These days, we’re spending double the amount of time on the internet, and social than we are watching TV.
Paul
Well it doesnt surprise me.
Mia
Yeah, it doesn’t surprise. It’s interesting, because when I speak, I’ve got a 10 year old son, Paul, you’ve got three of them on teenagers. And when I speak to the work placement students, we have you and we said to them, hey, what’s your favorite show on TV? And they look at you as if you’re blind? What’s your What are you watching? watching YouTube? I mean, I have my son who’s watching YouTube and the ads that are coming out on YouTube, he tried to convince me that I want to say one of the parties that are advertising on YouTube for the election, he was trying to convince me to vote for one of these parties because of cap tax cuts that are never going to happen. Yeah, and
Tony skinner
it’s because of the advertising. Exactly. And of course, it’s all personalized as well. So if you’ve looked up, I mean, Paul’s probably looked up some women shoes today. So now when he goes on to his phone, his account is logged in, you’ll find more ads on his phone for women’s shoes on his desktop, and potentially going down the track because lots of TVs have Android, you will have ads on your TV itself as well.
Mia
Well, so now we’re going back as my TV’s as old as dinosaurs. But talk me through that, well,
Tony skinner
I just bought a new TV, it’s a new 4k TV and all the wonderful stuff and whatever. But what it runs in the background is Samsung, but also a version of Android. Uh huh. So you’re going to get all these intertwined into linked Android devices, you also have Android in the car, and we’ll get to future as we go along. So it’s all over the place. So advertising, you’re going to be everybody digital marketing, advertising, it needs to be everywhere. And if you think about it for local businesses even more important, because 86% of consumers use the internet to find a local business. Yeah.
Mia
And actually blows my mind with what you’re saying now that everything is interchangeable, which makes me rethink, you know, any organizations digital strategy, because if you’re telling me that you can interrupt nearly every part of my life now because that’s what you’re saying, if I’m watching TV, you can interrupt me with an ad. Kids are watching YouTube, they get interrupted all the time. It’s so important now to make sure your messaging is correct. And making sure your messaging is spread in the correct way.
Tony skinner
And it’s going to be hyper personalized going forward. Because TVs will have the capability now will be even more in the future can identify which individuals are in the room, watching the TV Well,
Mia
when robots take over the world. Now I want to come back and talk a little bit very briefly if we’ve got time before the news about the personalization of things and and what that actually means because I’m getting a bit free tetchy because I don’t like Google knowing as much as I know about me currently. And it was correct. And it seems that lots of Tony You’re the one who’s programming Google to know too much about me.
